Listen To Older Voices presents the stories, views and opinions of our older citizens. It is predominantly in a life & times format, with interviewees reflecting upon their lives from earliest memories. An underlying principal of the program is to promote the concept of positive ageing, reinforcing the principle that older people have & continue to make a valuable contribution to both their local & wider community.
This is part 1 of a fantastic four-part series featuring the Life & Times of 97-year-old Eileen Hampson. Eileen lives in Altona, a bayside suburb of Melbourne. Her story really is quite exceptional commencing from the great depression years and going through to the 21st Century. She has certainly witnessed and been part of many changes. Eileen is erudite and she is a fabulous communicator and if that's not enough, she is a dynamo!
Born in the UK in 1919, she was an avid reader from a very young age and developed a life-long love for books. Her intelligence shone through as a girl when she won many scholarships and eventually a bursary to university. Yet as she shares willingly with us, circumstances dictated she go to work where she ended up working in a bookbinding business. However for Eileen this was bliss, she was in seventh heaven because, she was surrounded by books.
