Ratking - Music Review
What: Ratking
When: Thursday, 5th February
Where: Ding Dong Lounge
As soon as you enter the unprepossessing red door to the Ding Dong lounge you are enveloped in its heavy atmosphere, immediately it’s easy to tell that you’re in a more than adequate venue, cool lighting and decor add to the experience while a couple of bars and a largish crowd capacity leaves both beggars and choosers with nothing to complain about. The bar staff are far from the disinterested archetype and patrons are rarely seen waiting for service.
The supporting act Silent Jay warmed up the crowd in a relaxed fashion with his blend of R'n'B melodies and smooth vocals, while this may sound generic to some, the slight techno dub influences to his music are just enough to set him aside from the average performer in his category.From the moment Ratking came on stage the level of anticipation in the crowd was clear, the beats and vocals were on point from... -

The Dames album Launch at Northcote Social Club.
When a number of artists who have had a huge influence on the music scene come together, the term “Supergroup” comes to the fore. That’s exactly what happened when The Dames played the Northcote Social Club to launch their debut album. The Dames consist of Clare Moore, Kaye – Louis Patterson and Rosie Westbrook. With many years of musical experience behind them, it was a foregone conclusion that this album launch was going to be something pretty special. And special it was.
The Dames
The afternoon started with The Morning after Girls taking to the stage as The Dames support. Firing up a set of psychedelic guitar riffs, the duo played a set that set the perfect tone. The duo consisted of founding members Sacha Lucashenko and Martin B. Sleeman. With their driving guitars building a hypnotic wall of sound, more people were being drawn towards Northcote Social Clubs den of music mastery. Bringing back the 90’s music genre of shoe gaze into their set,... -

Alex Watts at The Wesley Anne
On the last Saturday in September, Melbourne only has eyes on one thing. The AFL Grand Final. When the excitement recedes and the sun has dipped below the horizon for the night, then it’s time to hit the town and partake in some stress free entertainment. We found our solace in a converted 19th Century Methodist Church called the Wesley Anne in Northcote. Tonight’s offering was part of the Darebin Music feast and was featuring a Melbourne local called Alex Watts with Seri Vida and Gosti sharing the performance duties.
The Wesley Anne still has the old style architectural appeal and with the sign “House of Assembly” still adorning the façade, it’s very appropriate that it is now used as a music venue. In the intimate setting of the band room, a nice congregation was gathering ready for the evening’s service. Seri Vida took to the stage to start off the nights proceedings. With her electric guitar, she worked through her set list which included a mix of rock numbers and a couple of... -

Live Review :: Local Natives
…the crowd flew into hoedown mode for ‘Sun Hands’. The harmonies swimming between each member encompassed the room, tying feverish guitar and percussion together…
Entering the warm embrace of the Metro Theatre for the Local Natives gig brought relief from the chill outside. A room packed with beards and cropped denim jackets greeted us, promising an evening of sonic adventures that even an awkward ticket office moment couldn’t kill.
The night came into full swing with the lowering of lights and a lively David Bowie track filling the room.*From the darkness the band strode onto the stage, with multi-instrumentalist Kelcey Ayer diving straight into title track ‘You & I’ off Hummingbird. The music washing over the crowd, taking us to places we don’t know.
Admittedly, I spent the first few songs squinting at Ayer’s shirt trying to suss out what those blue shapes could possibly be (Penguins? Sharks and fish?!? Stingrays?). After a drum stick launched into the audienc... -
