  • ‘TOTEM’ Cirque du Soleil

From the moment I was asked to cover opening night of Cirque du Soleil’s TOTEM at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse I could feel the pulse.

Every aspect of this dazzling event seemed organically synchronised, from driving into the well manned car park, through to the red carpet photo shoot, then comfortably moving into the magical Big Top tent, along with over 2,000 fellow wide eyed audience members; seemingly as one organism, an expansive collective soul. An energetic force field of maximum flow fuelling consciousness and connect, a most necessary ingredient for the death defying feats that we were to witness.

The musicians began to play, conjuring extraordinary staging and lighting effects along with magnificently costumed performances and from the beginning I was plugged in and turned on, feeling part of a super hive.

Cirque du Soleil’s TOTEM has been travelling the world for 3 years with 121 active members including artists and elite athletes, from 21 different countries, all speaking the universal language of art and creativity.

Since 1984 Cirque du Soleil has been evolving as ‘a marriage of cultures and artistic and acrobatic disciplines’, an incentive first forged by founding member Quebec’s Guy Lalilberte.

Today, Cirque du Soleil, a Quebec based company is a highly evolved global society with 4000 members including 1,300 scouted and selected artists from 50 nationalities, all collaborating for the pursuit of excellence.

TOTEM (a spirit being) is a fascinating journey into the evolution of mankind.

An outstanding and magical show that evokes imagination, Invokes the senses and provokes our emotions. Humanity and performance at it’s finest.

    • Frank Yamma & El Witeri at Yarra Hotel
      by Pation Pics

Frank Yamma performing at the Yarra Hotel

I was at the Yarra Hotel last Saturday night for special acoustic and electric guitar performances by outstanding legendary Aussie singer / songwriter's Frank Yamma and El Witeri front man for The Red Eyes.

On entering the pub the first people we saw were Frank exuding an unassuming presence yet looking magnificent in his flaming red shirt and black vest and reggae man El, switched on and ready to rock the first set, delivering a beautifully sung upbeat performance on love and life.

Once on stage Frank morphed from unassuming to the embodiment of land and culture.

Totally compelling crystal clear songs both in his native tongue of Pitjantjatjara and English, rich in imagery, emotion and spirit. Powerful acoustic, hand made guitar playing, that at times, to my ears, conjured, didjeridoo and a choir of voices.

Perceived as a World Music performer the world cannot get enough...
