  • The Ultimate Moving Checklist: Your Guide to a Streamlined Relocation

Moving house doesn’t need to be stressful.

You can do several things to make sure the process goes smoothly, and one of the most important is having a checklist for each step of the way. Luckily, we’ve devised a checklist that you can follow, covering every aspect of moving.

Let’s get straight into it. Preparation

Focusing on meticulous preparation is crucial to ensuring a smooth transition during your move. This will involve researching and choosing the right moving company, devising a realistic timeline, preparing a budget to manage expenses, and decluttering your space to lighten the load. Research and plan: moving companies, timeline.

Begin by researching reputable moving companies to compare services and prices. Check for companies with positive reviews and appropriate insurance coverage.

Use online volume calculators to get an idea of how much the move will cost, and how you can save money as well.

After selecting a moving company, collaborate with them to create a detailed timeline that specifies key milestones, such as packing start dates and the final moving date, ensuring you have a structured plan to follow. Budget: estimate costs, set funds aside.

It's vital to estimate the total cost of your move. Factor in the moving company's fees, packing supplies, insurance, and potential storage costs. Remember to allocate extra funds for unforeseen expenses.

A good rule of thumb is to set aside 15%-20% of your total moving cost for tipping movers, though tipping isn't mandatory. Declutter: donate, sell, dispose.

Decluttering before a move can significantly reduce stress and moving costs. Categorise items to donate, sell, or dispose.

Consider selling items online or through garage sales to offset moving expenses. Donating to charity or giving away to friends can be a gratifying way to declutter. For items not fit for donation or sale, ensure proper disposal or recycling. Weeks Before

In the weeks leading up to your move, you'll need to coordinate changes with your utility providers and start the packing process.

It's important to do this well in advance to ensure a seamless transition to your new home. Notify Utilities, Schools, Forward Mail

A bit of admin is needed weeks before you move.

This involves contacting utilities, schools, and mail; you might be surprised how often people forget these simple things.
    • Utilities: Contact your current utility companies to disconnect services at your current address and set up connections at your new home. This includes electricity, gas, water, internet, and phone services. Organise your disconnections for the day after you move out, and your connections for the day before you move in to avoid any potential issues.
    • Schools: If you have children, let their current school know about your move and arrange for their records to be transferred to their new school.
    • Mail: Head to your local post office or use the Australia Post change of address service to redirect your mail to your new address. This service can be set to start from a specific date that aligns with your move.
    Gather Packing Supplies, Pack Non-Essentials

Now, it’s time to start packing and getting ready.

Make sure you have the correct packing supplies, and get all your non-essentials packed away and ready for the move.
    • Packing Supplies: Acquire boxes, tape, bubble wrap, markers, and specialised containers for delicate items. Consider using boxes with coloured labels for an easier unpacking process.
    • Pack Non-Essentials: Begin by packing items you don't use daily, such as off-season clothing, books, and decorative items. Label each box with its contents and the room it's destined for in your new home, making sure to keep an inventory for tracking purposes.
    Days Before

In the days leading up to your move, it's crucial that you finalise your plans and ensure your home is ready to go. This stage is about locking in the details and preparing your space for transition. Confirm arrangements, pack essentials
    • Reconfirm Bookings: Contact your moving company to verify times, services, and costs. Ensure they have your correct new address and contact information.
    • Essentials Kit: Pack a box with items you'll need immediately upon arrival, such as toiletries, medications, chargers, basic cookware, and a few days' worth of clothes.
    Clean and prepare home, double-check
    • Cleaning: Clean your current home, including emptying and cleaning appliances, to ensure it's ready for the next occupants or final inspections.
    • Final Walk-through: Check every room, closet, and cabinet one last time to ensure nothing is left behind.
    Moving Day

On moving day, you are critical in ensuring a smooth transition. Your ability to manage the process directly influences the efficiency and success of your move. Coordinate with Movers

Your presence is essential when the movers arrive.

If you’ve chosen a reputable company, don’t micromanage them as they move things into their trucks. It’s important to be around to answer any questions they may have though, but try not to get in the way too much. Final Checks for Security, Forgotten Items

Before the movers seal the truck, do a final walk-through of your home. Check all rooms, closets, and storage areas for any overlooked items.

Confirm that windows and doors are secure and utilities are switched off or scheduled for disconnection. After the Move

Settling into your new home involves more than just moving your possessions. It's about making that space liveable and getting to know your surroundings. Unpack Essentials, Set Up Utilities

Right after you move, unpack your essentials like toiletries, some clothes, and basic cookware to help you get by for the first few days.

Getting your utilities sorted is also critical. Make sure to contact service providers for electricity, gas, water, internet, and phone services to ensure they are functional. Update Addresses, Explore New Neighbourhood

It's important to change your address with the post office, banks, and any subscriptions services you have to ensure that all your correspondence and bills follow you to your new home.

Once you've unpacked, take the opportunity to explore your new neighbourhood. Locate the nearest grocery stores, medical centres, and local amenities to familiarise yourself with the area.

      by Mick Pacholli

The abundance of guidance regarding African hair and skin care contains useful recommendations but also includes poorly founded suggestions. Following an unsuitable care plan for melanin-rich skin and textured hair results in several problems, including dryness and breakage, acne, and other conditions.
This section identifies the prevalent errors people make with African hair and skin care while providing practical solutions. Using harsh shampoo products that strip the hair of natural oils

Sulfate ingredients present in standard shampoo products remove essential oils from hair, which later produces dry brittle strands. African hair naturally dries easily and breaks more frequently because of its dry state.
The solution is purchasing sulfate-free products or choosing cleansing conditioners as a substitute. Regular hair cleansings should occur once per week or every two weeks to maintain cleanliness without extreme dryness. Not including

Moving can be a stressful and time-consuming experience. One of the most important decisions you'll make during the moving process is choosing the right moving company. A reliable mover can make the process smoother and less overwhelming, while the wrong one can cause unnecessary complications. To ensure a successful move, here are the key factors to consider when selecting a mover.

      1. Reputation and Reviews

The reputation of a moving company is one of the first things to check before making a decision. A trustworthy company will have positive reviews and a strong reputation for providing reliable and efficient services. You can start by asking friends, family, or colleagues for recommendations.
