I had the pleasure of meeting Tunisian born, Parisian musician Jean-Pierre Smadja aka SMADJ who is currently on tour along the east coast of Australia performing with his signature Oud, both acoustic and electric.

With it’s origins in the Middle East the Oud is considered a sacred instrument and described as the King of Instruments. Legend has it that the Oud was invented by Lamech, the sixth grandson of Adam from the pharaonic era stretching back over 5,000 years.

Smadj grew up listening to Oriental, Brazilian, funk and folk music and started his musical career as a Jazz guitarist at age 15. His interest in the mechanics of making music lead him to pursue a degree in sound engineering resulting in a fruitful career as a recording and sound engineer for other famous musicians.

I had the opportunity of filming a live to air interview at 3CR between Blues journalist / presenter Werner Martin and visiting Blues legend Ivan Zar.

Ivan painted a picture through word and song about his experiences touring indigenous communities throughout the Kimberley over a 20 year period. Fascinating to say the least. And I will present that footage in the not too distant future for you viewing pleasure.

In the interim, I would like to inform our readers about some gigs that are coming up later this week where you can catch Blues legend Ivan Zar performing along with Melbourne sensation Ezra Lee.

  • Sean Marchetti: The Yarra Street Project

Sean Marchetti: The Yarra Street Project

Singer/songwriter Sean Marchetti describes music as his “salvation” during some significantly hard times. It was through necessity he developed the characteristic soul/blues/pop hybrid style that now defines his sound. Currently one of Melbourne’s most popular live music acts, Marchetti’s enviable career thus far has seen the 29 year-old play shows right across his home state; including numerous AFL functions, and supporting industry stalwarts: Jimmy Barnes, Thirsty Merc, John Stevens, James Reyne, and Missy Higgins on their respective tours. In early 2014, Marchetti bought a ticket to the USA, and travelled solo in an RV along the Californian coast. His intention was to play as many gigs as possible, without having locked a single date down in advance. Marchetti ended up securing himself an impressive 25+ shows in 9 weeks, playing in many fantastic Californian cocktail bars and venues. Before his US trip, Marchetti had been paving his way as a performer singing othe...

  • Invasion Day March & Share the Spirit Festival 2015

Invasion Day March & Share the Spirit Festival 2015

Last Monday 26 January 2015 Melbourne again acknowledged INVASION DAY with a rally and a march.

Flowers and messages were left on the steps of Parliament to honour those that were killed at the hands of continued genocidal practices, massacres, black deaths in custody, stolen generation and the onslaught of assimilation.

We then moved onto Treasury Gardens for SHARE the SPIRIT Festival, encountering great vibes and talent and a catch up with friends.
